Run Wild with Spirit Riding Free

By Erin Petko, Publisher of Macaroni Kid Carlisle May 1, 2017

I have always loved horses. They are such a majestic, intelligent and beautiful animal. Like most little girls,  I always wanted a pony and still joke with my Mom that she never did get me that pony! When my daughter took horseback riding lessons last year, I always looked forward to being able to sit for that hour and watch the horses and how my daughter interacted with them.  Each horse really had a unique personality and the instructor was great with pairing the children with the horse that met their personality.

I really enjoyed the movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, so I was really looking forward to Dreamworks Spirit Riding Free coming to Netflix. This weekend, I had the pleasure of having a Spirit Riding Free release party at Create-A-Palooza for several local families. We painted horse ceramics, enjoyed snacks (apples and popcorn of course), and got two watch the first 2 episodes of Spirit Riding Free.

with her father and sister, Cora. Her father is supervising the building of a railroad. Lucky is really concerned with making friends and she quickly realizes that she must take up horseback riding to fit in.  Lucky makes friends with 2 local girls, Pru and Abigail, who each have their own horse. She then befriends a wild and stubborn horse she names Spirit. The girls and their horses go on adventures, learning what it means to live free.

I enjoyed the first 2 episodes and am looking forward to the rest of the series. It kept the attention of all of the children at the party and we were all laughing! I feel that as the series goes on, there will be several lessons for children.  My oldest daughter is Hispanic and Caucasian and she really loved that Lucky is as well. As a parent,  I love the cultural diversity and personality differences of the characters. It is really hard for us as a family to find something we can all watch together but I think this will be something we will enjoy.

Check out the official trailer for Spirit Riding Free! It will be available on Netflix on May 5th.
